Sometimes you need an expert to repair or tune-up your AC, heat pump, or any of your other home comfort systems. But how do you find a good one?
When you shop for an HVAC technician, these are four questions that will help you separate the bona fide candidates from the contractors you want to avoid.
- Ask for a license number and proof insurance – You can research the license number via your state’s contractor licensing board. Also ask for proof of insurance for both liability and workman’s compensation – you don’t want to be on the hook if anything goes wrong while they’re working in your home.
- Ask how long they’ve been in business – Like any profession, experience matters. The industry is full of independent, unlicensed operators – protect yourself!
- Ask for references – Word of mouth recommendations are invaluable for your peace of mind. Ask for referrals from past customers – if they can’t provide them, it’s probably best to move on.
- Ask for a written warranty for their work – A good HVAC technician will stand by his work. Ask for specific terms of the work they’re going to complete and for terms of their warrantee. And don’t forget to tell them about warrantees on your current HVAC system so they don’t accidentally void them!
